mental health off the mat

this month's topic:
Managing Negative Body Image Issues

Join us for this new series at Oak + Lotus Yoga:

Ahimsa + Mental Health

Ahimsa is the yogic ethical principle of not causing harm to other living things, and in this monthly offering, we'll explore the teaching of Ahimsa as they connect to therapy and mental health.

This workshop is led by Melanie Dyer, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas. She has been practicing in the mental health field in some form or another for nearly a decade, and her practice has included things like crisis work, advocacy, and long-term therapy. Currently, she specializes in working with highly anxious individuals with tendencies toward perfectionism, people pleasing, and intellectualization.

In Ahimsa + Mental Health we will explore a variety of topics including, but not limited to:
●      Nonviolent Communication
●      How to deal with an inner critic
●      How to be more self-compassionate
●      Managing negative body image issues
●      Perfectionism and how to give yourself a break

Each class will last 75 minutes and will be broken into four parts: lecture/orientation to the topic, interactive activity, q&a, and a guided meditation related to the topic.

This class is ideal for anyone, but it might be a particularly great place to start for anyone who is at the beginning of an intentional wellness journey, who doesn’t know much about mental health topics but is eager to learn, or who wants to see what this whole therapy thing is all about.  This class should in no way be considered a replacement for professional mental health services, but it can be a primer to take the first steps into a more mentally well space!
